“You can spend your life planning for success or you can arrange for
all the support you actually need to be successful”
-Thomas Leonard (founder of Coachville)
A personal leadership coach does just what an athletic coach does, only in a more complete and bigger way. Your coach challenges you, and takes the time to find out what winning in life means to you. A personal leadership coach is your partner in living the life you want both personally and professionally; someone to hold you accountable for what you say you want, to make sure you really do live up to your potential.
A coach is not a consultant, so therefore they should be more interested in giving you the tools and strategies to make your own decisions, instead of telling you what to do.
No matter where you are now there is always a desire for more; more success in life or business, more money, closer relationships, to be in a career we are passionate about, run a successful business, etc. It is the nature of people to want to attain more and become more, and we all struggle with how to get what we’re looking for. This is what ‘up leveling’ is about; the desire to move to the next level, whatever that might look like for the individual.
Coaching is like…
- Having a flight plan from A to B
- Having an oasis in a storm
- A steady boat in turbulent waters
- Someone being on your side without judgment, no matter what
Coaching is:
Action oriented – having goals and dreams is important however if it is not backed up with a solid action plan which is implemented then it is all worthless.
SMART – Goals are centered on being Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed.
Results driven – the main reason to hire a coach is to ensure that results are produced.
Integrity – you are treated as a person of integrity.
Values based – while we know that money can’t buy happiness, being aligned to your values can bring fulfillment into your life.
Strengths focused – while we all have a combination of strengths and weaknesses, many times we work hard on moving our weaknesses to strengths. This can be like pushing a large car up a hill. Instead coaching works to maximize your strengths and assists you in finding ways to delegate your areas of weakness.
Continuous one-on-one attention – as a client you receive individualized attention over an extended period of time. Where else might you be able to receive this? Coaching helps in both personal effectiveness and leadership.
Personal accountability – much like a sports coach or personal trainer in a gym, a coach works with you to set goals and then to develop a path to achieve them.
Expanded thinking – the client can benefit from the coach’s professional and personal background by seeing other perspectives in any given situation.
Uncovering blind spots – your coach is not meant to be your friend, but serves as an astute observer causing the client to self reflect and uncover blind spots that are preventing them from moving forward in some way.
Coaches:
- Ask their clients to do more than they would have done on their own
- Inspire their clients to ask better questions about their life, and what they want
- Help their clients to set better goals, and then develop strategies to reach those goals
- Focus their clients on how to produce results quicker
Is coaching right for you:
Ask yourself…
- Am I willing to be open to new ideas
- Am I comfortable with being uncomfortable, or at least willing to take action
- Am I committed to doing the necessary tasks between each session
- Do I have a desire to establish goals (if not already there) and setting clear action plans and strategies to achieving these goals
- Am I interested in discovering the barriers currently in play that are stopping me or slowing me slowing me down in fulfilling my goals
If so…then coaching may be RIGHT for you!
